Bari, the city of Saint Nicholas
An Adriatic port that has always looked east, Bari has kept the relics of Saint Nicholas since 1087, venerated by Catholics and Orthodox alike. The old town, with the basilica, the cathedral, the Norman-Swabian castle and women making orecchiette pasta in the street, sits right next to the seafront.
All of Puglia is within reach: Polignano and Monopoli on the sea, the trulli of Alberobello, the Itria Valley, Castel del Monte and, just over the border, the Sassi of Matera.
